I DIDN’T SET OUT TO BUILD AN INSTITUTION. I SET OUT TO SURVIVE.
Raised by a single mother, I grew up knowing that options were not handed to you. College was not a path that opened easily for me. But cosmetology school was. And what I found there changed everything — not just a trade, but a sense of self. A way to walk into a room and know that I had something to offer.
Skill gave me income. Income gave me independence. Independence gave me the freedom to think beyond just getting by.
Years later, I traveled to Sierra Leone and met young women who carried the same hunger I once had — but with even fewer doors open to them. Women with extraordinary talent, with hands that could create, with eyes that could see beauty where others saw nothing. But without structure, without access, without anyone willing to formalize what they already knew how to do.
Then I met Fanta. She was Fourteen. She had already left school to support her family. Her story mirrored my own — but she had even fewer options than I did.
That moment became the spark for Building Beauty.
What I built was not a charity. It was the institution I wished had existed for me.

BUILDING BEAUTY
THE INSTITUTION
Beauty has always been powerful. We are making it official.
A future institution for culture, creativity, and community.
WHAT IS BUILDING BEAUTY
Founded in Freetown, Sierra Leone, Building Beauty bridges the gap between raw talent and professional opportunity. The program trains the next generation of beauty professionals while creating pathways to financial independence.
Building Beauty is a cosmetology training program and professional beauty salon where students learn hairstyling, braiding, wig installation, makeup artistry, nail care, and salon management inside a real working environment. Alongside technical training, students develop business and financial skills needed to build sustainable careers in the beauty industry.
Students train inside a professional salon from day one, learning real client service, professional standards, and entrepreneurship. The goal is simple: transform natural talent into long-term opportunity for women and youth.
Three things set us apart:
01 We treat beauty as a serious trade, not a fallback option. Every student is trained to professional standard from day one.
02 We combine technical mastery with business training. Graduates leave knowing how to earn, manage, and grow — not just how to style.
03 We connect local training to global standards. A certificate from Building Beauty opens doors beyond one neighborhood or one city.
For students, this is legitimacy and leverage.
For donors, this is a scalable workforce model in an industry worth hundreds of billions globally.
For clients, this is access to trained professionals who understand both craft and care.
We are not just building a salon. We are building an institution designed to raise the standard of the entire beauty industry.
Built to scale across Sierra Leone, the diaspora, and beyond.
A world where beauty is recognized as power. Where women once overlooked step boldly into independence, leadership, and legacy. Where scissors and combs are understood for what they have always been — tools of transformation.
That is the world Building Beauty is building toward.
We began in Freetown. We are growing across the diaspora. We are building the infrastructure — the training, the certification, the community, the standards — that makes this possible at scale.
Every woman who walks through our doors carries a story. Every graduate who walks out carries a future. And every future she builds makes the next one more possible.
